Firefighter Certificate

If you're ready to answer the call and serve your community, the Firefighter Certificate at OSU-OKC gives you the training and credentials to launch your career in fire service. This hands-on, fast-paced program prepares you to meet the physical and mental demands of firefighting while earning nationally recognized certifications.

What You’ll Learn

Through OSU-OKC’s Fire Academy, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge needed to respond to emergencies safely and effectively. You’ll train in fire suppression, hazardous materials response, auto extrication, and flammable liquids and gas emergencies. You’ll also complete coursework that prepares you for certification exams in:

  • Firefighter I & II (IFSAC)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations  
  • Basic Auto Extrication
  • Flammable Liquids and Gas Emergencies

 

If you choose to enroll in the EMT portion of the program, you’ll be eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT (NREMT) certification exam upon successful completion of the EMSP coursework.

 

Program Format

The Firefighter Certificate is a 10-credit-hour program offered in three academy formats throughout the year:

 

  • Spring Academy: 14 weeks (January–May)
  • Summer Academy: 10 weeks (May–July)
  • Fall Academy: 14 weeks (August–December)
  • A 16 week, two semester, Concurrent enrollment High School program for Spring and fall semesters is available for with an on and off campus option.

 

Classes meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The summer session is ideal for high school students entering their junior or senior year, allowing you to complete firefighter training during summer break and return later for EMT coursework.

 

Admissions Requirements

To enroll, you must:

 

  1. Be at least 16 years old.
  2. Apply and be accepted to OSU-OKC.
  3. Complete required FEMA online courses before the first day of class:  
    • IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System
    • IS-200.C: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
    • IS-700.B: Introduction to the National Incident Management System  
    • IS-800.D: National Response Framework

 

Important Notes

You must earn at least 80% in each fire course to qualify for certification exams.

  • Due to the short duration of the program, it is not eligible for financial aid.
  • If you're looking for a longer, aid-eligible option, consider the Fire Science A.A.S. degree, which includes the Fire Academy.
